The Rollo is built around cedar wood left unpainted under a clear varnish, so the natural grain stays visible rather than being hidden under a painted barrel — a design choice as much as a practical one, since it lets you see the wood quality directly. The graphite core itself is fully bonded to the casing, which keeps the lead from fracturing inside the wood if the pencil gets dropped, a failure mode that's otherwise invisible until you try to sharpen it and the tip keeps breaking off.

It's sold individually across six hardness grades, from 2H through 8B, each one marked with a different colored end cap so it can be picked out of a full set at a glance rather than reading tiny stamped lettering on the side. The body is hexagonal to resist rolling off an angled desk.
