Clairefontaine has been making paper in the Vosges region of France since 1858, drawing on pure local river water that remains essential to clean paper production. Over 165 years later, the mill and the finished stationery are still made under the same roof — one of the last European manufacturers to keep the full process in-house.

The brand is best known among artists for its specialist surfaces — particularly Pastelmat, the benchmark paper for soft pastel layering, and PaintON, a 250 g/m2 multi-technique stock that handles acrylics, gouache, ink, and dry media without buckling. Available across multiple paper tones including White, Grey, Natural, Black, and Denim Blue. All paper is sourced from PEFC-certified forests and produced using chlorine-free processes.
